Melanie Tapson, a mom of two and a voice therapist, shares her journey as an entrepreneur. She tells her story about how she got into doing the very unusual work that she does and what her business looked like in the early days. She talks about how she used to define success by working hard and seeing as many clients as possible. This, as it turns out, is the formula for hitting burn out.
She goes into detail about how, instead of thinking about investing in herself or even being an entrepreneur, she was thinking more about how she could help individuals. Melanie had no idea what success would look like for her and admits to suffering from low self-esteem.
Melanie raves about the benefits of A-Players group coaching. The benefits she found in this environment were many, but most notably, how the other women in the group inspired and enlightened her. She also points out the importance of surrounding yourself with people who “get” what you do for reassurance and support. Before being part of the group, she hadn’t thought of self-care as a priority, goal or measure of success. It had never occurred to her to put herself first; she feels that by doing what is expected of her was what it took to be successful.
The conversation moves to clarity – Melanie talks about how she checks in regularly with herself. This ensures that the work she does still lights her up brings her joy and cause to celebrate. To accomplish this, she had to reframe her thinking, give herself permission to think about what was inside her heart and make time for it.
We also discuss the importance of time, a precious commodity in itself. There are questions that we should all be asking ourselves, and strategies that can be used to ensure we are using our time most effectively.
So, to define our success, we must focus on shifting to a more joyful existence, which will help us create the life we want. It’s important to stop every once in a while, check-in and enjoy the moment.
